Als der Zweite Weltkrieg zu Ende ging, lag Elbing in Schutt und Asche. Die einstige Hauptstadt Westpreußens war ein riesiges Trümmerfeld. Elbing konnte nicht wiederaufgebaut werden - also baute man es neu. Man errichtete die Straßen der Altstadt in historisierendem Stil. Architekten mit Sinn für die Geschichte machten es möglich: das Wunder von Elbing.
