“What politicised me was the civil rights protest. It wasn’t anything I heard in the house, or even in my grandmother’s house in Donegal. There was no republicanism whatsoever in my background.”

As a teenager growing up in Derry’s Bogside area in the 1960s, Martin McGuinness quickly became aware of the injustices heaped upon his community by decades of unionist rule since the partition of Ireland in the 1920s. And when people began to campaign for basic civil rights, he saw that they were met by both loyalist and state violence, including killings.

This had a profound impact upon the people of the Bogside and the Creggan, including a young Martin McGuinness, and he developed a burning desire to see an end to inequality and injustice. Like many others of his generation, he saw no alternative but to join the IRA.

So began the career of one of the foremost and iconic political leaders of his generation. At the age of 22 he was already chosen as a republican representative for secret talks with the British in London in 1972.

The twists and turns of the IRA campaign, the rise of Sinn Féin as an electoral force and the development of a peaceful strategy for the achievement of a united Ireland, are here described alongside Martin’s family life: his marriage to Bernie Canning, their four children together and many happy times at home and on holiday in Donegal.

After ten years as deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness resigned in the face of ‘the most crude and crass bigotry’ within elements of political unionism. The  institutions of the Good Friday Agreement were becoming unworkable. Even so, he never lost sight of the importance of national reconciliation and, to the very end, he remained committed to healing the divisions of the past.

About the author:

James McVeigh is a lifelong Irish republican who served two terms of imprisonment during the conflict. He was the last Officer Commanding of the IRA prisoners in the H-Blocks before they were closed in July 2000 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

While in the H-Blocks he studied with the Open University, graduating with an honours degree in History. On release he went on to complete a masters degree in Human Rights at Queen’s University Belfast.

In 2011 he was elected to Belfast City Council where he led the Sinn Féin council group for two terms before standing down to devote himself to trade union organising and fighting for workers’ rights.

He is the author of two Irish history books, Executed: Tom Williams and the IRA and Goodbye, Dearest Heart: The Story of Lieutenant General Joseph McKelvey 1898-1922. He recently published his first novel Stolen Faith (O’Brien Press), an historical thriller based on Ireland’s mother and baby homes scandal.

Solid, Detailed Design
Color: White, Color: White
I really like this garden angel statue -- from the SAMPU CRAFT store. I like the features and the overall design. The product features a solar lamp. It's super easy to use and requires no wires or electricity. The lamp is easily removed, so you can charge it up in a sunny spot and replace it if necessary. It doesn't take much sun to charge it up. While it's not an overly bright lamp, it will last for hours. The design of the angel figurine is very detailed and expressive. The wings and hair are particularly well done. I love the gently curved posture of the angel as she rests her face on her hands. The figurine is on the smaller side -- only about a foot high -- but it stands out as a nice statue in my garden. This garden piece would definitely work on the lawn or on a porch. It's a nice yellowish-white that would blend in to most places. But, there are a few green vines painted along the side of the little lamp post which makes it perfect to sit in a garden. The lamp casing itself is black and will just disappear when the light is on. I have several angel statues and I must say -- this one is very nice and stands out. It makes for a soothing, peaceful addition to my memory garden! Thank you.

Great garden decor the solar lights only worked the first day i even checked the battery position and the on off switch, I am assuming the battery died, but I can get another solar light i still love the design.

Good Quality
Color: White
This is absolutely beautiful. The lighting is ambient and not bright, with a warm glow (not as bright as the photos), and the charge lasts about 3 hours, give or take. The plaster mold is done very well so that it looks high end. It is also high-quality because I dropped it and it didn't break. For this reason, the price is right. This would be a great gift, but also a wonderful ornament for the yard or even as a welcome at the front door.

Looks nice, and works well but the light doesn't fit well.
Color: White
I have mixed feelings about this little angel light. I got it for my mom, and she really loves it, and it looks great on the edge of the garden by the walkway up to the house. It doesn't provide a lot of light, but what it does offer is just enough at night to help people navigate until they're close enough for our motion activated porch light to turn on. The light however just doesn't come installed in the figure and doesn't fit very well into the hole it's supposed to sit in. I used some thick double sided tape as a gasket to hold it in place and solved the problem, but it's worth noting anyway. As for overall quality, it's ok, but not great. The figure is made of resin (plastic), and is fairly thin and not very strong. It's also very light and can be knocked or blown over by wind very easily. The casting on the angel itself is ok, but the socket the light sets into was misshapen and I also had to clean it up to even get the light to fit into it. (There was some flashing at the bottom of the hole that prevented it from sitting all the way down) Battery life seems to be pretty good, and lasts through the night as long as it gets enough sun during the day, but on cloudy days it tends to only last a few hours at most. And the light sensor does work well, it comes on right at dusk. As for value I'm not sure I'd say it's a great deal for the current price, but if you can find it on sale might be worth getting. Of course on anything decorative value is subjective and depends largely on how much you like the look of it. As always if I encounter any other issues or think of anything else to add I'll update this review!
