Rock Red Mushroom (Fungiidae Coral) (Discosoma sp.)

(Also known as Red Mushroom Coral, Disc Anemone, or Red Rock Mushroom Coral)

Overview

The Rock Red Mushroom (Discosoma sp.) is a hardy and brilliantly coloured soft coral (Corallimorpharian) prized for its vivid red tones and smooth, fleshy appearance. Its broad, circular oral disc displays rich shades of crimson, scarlet, or metallic red, often with subtle highlights of orange or pink under blue-spectrum lighting. The coral’s soft surface may show faint radial lines extending from the centre, adding depth and character. Peaceful, resilient, and low-maintenance, the Red Mushroom Coral is perfect for aquarists seeking a bold splash of colour in shaded or low-light areas of their reef aquarium.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Found in protected reef slopes, lagoonal environments, and under rocky ledges, where light levels are moderate to low and water flow is gentle.

Feeding

The Rock Red Mushroom Coral is photosynthetic, relying primarily on zooxanthellae within its tissues. Supplemental feeding can enhance colour vibrancy and promote faster growth. Feed 1–2 times per week with:

  • Finely chopped seafood (shrimp, clam, or fish)
  • Mysis or enriched brine shrimp
  • Marine snow or coral powders

Target feeding is optional but helps encourage colony expansion and reproduction.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting.Discosoma corals thrive under gentle, diffused illumination and may bleach under overly intense light.

  • PAR range: 50–150 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
  • Ideal for shaded rockwork, aquarium corners, or lower reef zones.
  • Blue and actinic lighting enhances the coral’s deep red fluorescence.
Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle water movement allows full expansion while preventing debris buildup. Avoid strong, direct currents, which can cause tissue retraction or detachment.

Placement
  • Place on lower rockwork or substrate, in shaded or partially lit areas.
  • Allow 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) of space between colonies or neighbouring corals.
  • Discosoma attaches naturally to rock and spreads by budding or tissue fission, gradually forming colourful carpets.
  • Excellent for nano reefs and low-light sections of mixed coral systems.
Tank Mates

Reef safe. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (clownfish, gobies, tangs, wrasses, blennies, etc.)
  • Invertebrates such as shrimp, snails, and small hermit crabs
  • Other soft corals and non-aggressive LPS species

Avoid:

  • Aggressive corals with long sweeper tentacles (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)
  • Butterflyfish or large angelfish that may nip at soft tissue
Aggression

Mildly aggressive.Discosoma can release mild toxins and may overgrow slower-growing neighbours if placed too close. Provide adequate spacing to prevent contact.

Experience Level

Beginner. The Rock Red Mushroom Coral is hardy, forgiving, and highly adaptable, making it suitable for aquarists of all experience levels.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12
  • Calcium: 380–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm (tolerant up to 15 ppm)
  • Phosphate: <0.05 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 litres (13 gallons); ideal for nano reefs and larger systems

Stable water quality and moderate nutrient levels support optimal growth and maintain the coral’s deep red pigmentation.

A true classic
Size: 7, Color: Maple Suede
One of my favorite shoes ever! Been wearing these since the 90's. They have changed a few things since then but I'd say the overall quality is still great. They fit true to size and are very comfortable right out the box. These are one of the most versitile pairs of shoes you can own. They go with almost any outfit. This time around I purchased the sand and beeswax colorways. If you've never owned a pair I highly recommend these.

Clark's Wallabee's are the best shoes ever made!
I was looking for a new pair of shoes, after one of my Clarks casual shoes (made in india) literally split in half. It only had 8 months of use! I was so angry, so much so that as a loyal Clark's customer I vowed to move on to another brand of shoe. So I began my search, and search, and search... I just couldn't find any pair of shoe that exited me as much as Clark's did. I began to reminisce on my first pair of Clark's that started it all. The Wallabees. The quality in craftsmanship, the nice thick leather, the stitching, and the indestructible weird looking jelly soles. These things could take a hit. I mean I wore them consistently for two years and they just wouldn't budge. I eventually needed something different, so I put them in the closet; only to come out when ever a pair of shoe wore out and I needed a something while I made another purchase. After about 2 years of that I realize I shouldn't be buying more shoes I should be wearing my wallabees. So I wore them for several more years until I finally decided its was time to part... What a mistake. Here I had a pair a shoes that lasted me almost a decade I parted away for no real good reason. It took me many more years of wearing other Clark's and other brands to come to this realization. The Wallabee's are the best shoes ever made! I broke my vow of not buying Clark's after that indian made piece of crap, and decided to buy these. To my surprise the wallabee's are no longer made in England or Ireland, but instead made in China! I was sceptical as to how great the quality may be. I mean I lost faith in Clark's after all. But after careful inspection, these shoe's look, smell, and feel just like the originals. The craftsmanship looks the same as well (a little more modern support). I did some research and turns out China has one of Clark's best shoe factory in the world. I can not judge these shoes by where is was made, but how they fare out with the old ones. So far I'm very very happy! I will wear these and put it to the test of time, and see if they will go for almost a decade as my originals did. At this point they once again take their place as my number one favorite pair of shoes.

Love them!
Size: 7, Color: Maple Suede
These are a classic! Amazing materials and product. If you have never owned a pair, be aware that the soles will get dirty quickly and visibly noticeable. I would say true to size in what you were in sneakers.
