What is mulch?

Mulch is defined as any material that is placed on the surface of cultivated soil, be that over beds, fields or over compost in individual pots. It could be something like our jute mulch mats, cardboard, straw, hay or bark chippings. It’s a technique that’s been around for millennia, but it seems to have fallen out of favour through modern farming methods.

However, mulch is definitely enjoying a come-back due to the increased need for sustainable agriculture and with methods of gardening like the ‘no-dig’ method.

What are the benefits of mulch?

The benefits of mulch are widespread, both for domestic gardeners and widescale horticulturalists, farmers and foresters. We have certainly noticed the benefits of mulch our gardens and in our Buy Land Plant Trees project.

Here are a few of the benefits of mulch:

  • Conserves water – mulch conserves water by reducing water evaporation from the soil. Mulch (in most cases, but particularly in the case of our Mulch Mats) allows water to permeate through it into the soil below. However, the barrier the mulch forms between soil and the air reduces the amount of water that evaporates off the soil’s surface. Studies of mulch in draught-prone countries have demonstrated how the water-saving properties of mulch improve crop growth.
  • Naturally suppresses weeds – using mulch to cover soil and compost where plants or crops are growing creates a natural barrier against weeds. The weeds don’t have access to light, can’t photosynthesise, and therefore perish and eventually rot away into the ground.
  • Reduces competition for water and nutrients – by reducing the number of weeds it ensures that there is less competition for plants. This means they can access more water and nutrients, helping them to grow more effectively! When looking at this in an agricultural context, using mulch reduces the large-scale use of herbicides which is beneficial both to the wider environment and us.
  • Reduces temperature fluctuations – Mulch protects plant roots against temperature changes by acting as an insulator. They help to regulate soil temperature to keep plant roots cool in the summer and warm in the winter ensuring plants can continue to grow well. Our Mulch Mats are particularly good at this because of their density.

Why are Chimney Sheep’s Jute Mulch Mats a great mulch option?

  • No faffing required – we love our Mulch Mats because they are quick and easy to use. There is no shovelling, cutting to size or pinning down required. Just slot them around the base of the plant you want to protect and hey presto! They sit firmly on the ground and what we find is that weeds and grass they suppress, sort of grow into the fabric of the jute. They don’t manage to get through but they help to anchor the mulch mat to the soil, so it sits nice and firmly in place.
  • Super versatile – our Mulch Mats can be used in gardens, allotments, greenhouses, on house plants – the list is endless! The great thing about them is that you can use them in individual standard plant pots or for putting round individual plants in larger beds.
  • Mulch for every plant – because each plant will get its own little bit of mulch all to themselves, the concentration of mulch per plant is much higher than having to share lots of mulch (like with straw or bark chippings) with other plants.
  • Provides nutrients for the plants as they compost down – jute is a natural vegetable fibre so once it has composted down, it provides lots of nutrients to help plant growth.
  • Helping to deter greedy slugs and snails - while we can never promise that our Mulch Mats will completely deter slugs and snails, they do make it a lot harder for the greedy molluscs to gain access and devour precious plants. We’ve had a lot of success from pre-soaking the mats in the Hole-less Hosta garlic decoction, which seems to have been very effective at persuading the slugs and snails to go and consume something else. Mwah ha ha ha. It’s not kind but nor are they!
  • Made from recycled coffee sacks – jute is such a fantastic fibre which works perfectly for mulch. We don’t like seeing great materials go to waste, so we use recycled jute coffee sacks to make our Mulch Mats.
  • No plastic – unlike the polypropylene versions, these Mulch Mats are completely plastic-free which means they will biodegrade and compost down completely, without leaving microplastics in the soil.

We have lots of other sizes of Mulch Mats so why not take a look here to find the perfect size for your garden project! We also make Jute Tree Spats which are perfect for when you are planting baby trees. Need lots of our Mulch Mats or Tree Spats? Get in touch!

😍😍 BEST DEBUT NOVEL EVER
Format: Paperback
I’m having trouble finding accurate words to describe the way this book made me feel, but I am going to do my best. To start off with basic elements, the character and world building are phenomenal. I feel a strong bond to not only the two main characters, Ara and Rogue, but to each and every character introduced throughout the book. The author did a stellar job of giving each of them unique personhood. All of the scenes are beautifully described. So much so that throughout the entirety of the book, I could see every scene: the towns, the castles, the meadows, the landscape. I have had difficulty with this and with distinguishing between outlying characters while reading in the past, but I did not have to think to remember details of world or character building because they flowed naturally within the story and were described well. I have read book series before that made me want to be a part of that world, but I actually felt like I got to step into Auryna and Ravaryn! The plot twists!! Although this is not a suspense novel, it still had me on a rollercoaster of emotions and on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I haven’t cried actual tears over a book since I was in high school (and I’ve read a LOT). This book finally broke the floodgates in the final few chapters. Multiple times. And we love a good cliffhanger. It truly made me FEEL. THE SPICE is a solid 3.5/5. Some of the scenes had me flushed, some had me taking notes, some just had my jaw slack and my mouth hanging open. Bravo, JD Linton, bravo. The relationships: friendships, family, romantic, ALL of the relationships in this book have so much meaning. The author does a great job at making you feel the love, the anger, the peace, the frustrations, the safety, the familiarity, etc. between the characters. Ara and Rogue. I can not say enough and I also do not want to say too much. Just know that I feel like I know them both, to their core. I know what their childhood looks likes, their darkest moments, their biggest fears, their dreams and passions, what they want in life… The POV switches were seamless. I am so happy this author decided to let us see from both sets of eyes. I can not wait for book two after that cliffhanger. And there is SO much potential for at least one prequel, I can’t wait to see where this author goes! I hope this series continues and flourishes. Fingers crossed!

Amazing!
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
This book was phenomenal, I devoured it within a few days! For this being a debut novel, it is fantastic and I would’ve thought the author was a seasoned author. I have zero complaints about this book. Let me start by saying that the world building was phenomenal. I could picture everything in my head because of how detailed it was — that’s how good it was written. And I absolutely love the “captive/captor” trope so much, it’s become one of my favorite tropes, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book had that. I loved the banter between Rogue and Ara — they’re both snarky and witty, plus with the romantic tension, it made the dialogue that much better. Speaking of romantic tension, yes there is spice but not so much of it that it overrides the plot, which I loved. For me, this would probably be on the 3/5 level of spice. This book had a ton of plot twists and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

High on Tropes and Satisfaction
Format: Kindle
This is a great Romantasy book full of action, adventure, and everything you look for in this genre. I won’t lie: it does kinda feel like the author found every common trope from every successful book of this kind and threw them all into this novel. But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Especially in romance, there’s a large audience who has specific expectations, and they want them every time. Nothing wrong with that and many times I’m one of them. I have no idea what defines a spoiler honestly, so spoiler alert!!!!!!! Tropes include: Only one bed at the inn/bar Dissatisfaction with life before hunk appears Lost royalty The chosen one Montage of dress up time followed by shocked hunk Forbidden romance between two from rival peoples Power that cannot be controlled, simply guided/asked Gathering intel at the inn/bar FMC who knows how to fight/use weapons well There’s probably more but no need to list them all. Good story and I would recommend!

☕️The need to claim her, mark her, break her, seared through me like white fire🎨
Format: Kindle
"Some trauma stuck with you and Kaleb's had fused itself to his bones like a demented shadow. Rearing it's ugly head whenever it got hungry, feasting on whatever stability he'd managed to regain since it's last meal." "The need to claim her, mark her, break her, seared through me like white fire." "I shivered at his touch, expecting to find disgust in his stare, but finding something else instead. Wonder. And something else. A sort of recognition that could only come from someone who knew the same level of pain. Of fear for their own life." "In a moment of clarity, I realized I knew why a good guy would never be enough. Good guys didn't touch you like bad guys did. They didn't push the limits. Hold you down. Make you insane with need. Make you scream." "I figured Becca was like a bad habit. All I needed to do was resist her long enough and I'd be free. I didn't want to be free. I needed to be free." "Like he was waiting patiently for me to come to him, like he knew he didn't have to chase me anymore. Back to being my Mr. Dark and Gloomy. No. Not my. Never mine." "Let the panic consume you. Accept it or else it'll never let you go. And then remember, you are stronger than you think you are." Yes! This first book was everything. I have been very curious about Becca and her new love interests since I read The Crows series. This was packed full of action and the plot has me fully invested. The spice was spicin 🔥🔥🔥. The characters were fleshed out fully as well. This one left on a cliffhanger and I wanted to punch Aodhan. Although secretly my heart breaks for him 😂😭. This follows Becca as she moved to CA and is attending Calarts. Her father cut her off, she has no money, so she has to start over by herself. She ends up running into Hardin and Kaleb who are brothers and cousins to the Saints from the crows series. Becca, while attracted to them, hates them as she blames their father for her mother's death. Meanwhile she meets another stranger named Aodhan who wants to take her on a date. Who is this mysterious Irishman? While Hardin and Kaleb are the kings and rule the LA area, a new Irish gang is trying to take their turff. Secrets are unleashed regarding Becca's past. Lives are lost. A war is breaking out. Secret identities are in the mist. Who will survive in this duet? I always loved Becca from the other series. She has been through a lot and she's still healing from those events. You could see her growth in this first book. I love her fiery and badass self. Kaleb is a golden retriever and ray of sunshine when he's not stuck in his trauma. I love how outgoing and funny he is. His brother Hardin is the opposite. He doesn't talk. He's very angry and doesn't take crap from anyone. Aodhan is a mystery. He seems sweet and chill but also extremely broken. All of these men and Becca have heavy trauma going on. The spicy scenes between her and the brothers was so hot 🔥🔥🔥. They had insane chemistry 🥵. I'm curious how Aodhan will be added. I loved seeing cameos from the crows and Ava! I hope we get to see more of them in the next book. I love how Sloane is such a fierce badass. The women in this series are just fantastic. Damien is a strong character and I'm excited to see how that unfolds. I also love Becca's new roommates. Onto the next book!

Soulless Saint
Format: Kindle
This is a spinoff featuring Becca, Hardin and Kaleb. You don't need to read the other Elena Lawson series to read this one. I didn't and I understood the plot easily. Becca is struggling to get back on her feet after her dad cuts her off. She finds a job and roommates and keeps bumping into Kaleb and Hardin. They are members of The Saints, Santa Clarita chapter. Their cousins are from the Thorn Valley chapter featured in the other series. Hardin is silent but deadly whereas Kaleb is battling demons and the world knows it. They've been asked to look after Becca, unbeknownst to her but they get too close and become obsessed with her. None of them can stay away from each other which puts Becca and danger from The Saints enemies. Can she survive more gang life violence? Becca wants to stay away but their chemistry is undeniable. This book has lots of violence and lots of passion. It's a thrill ride from beginning to end.
