This work is 14 x 19.5" (35 x 50cm). Acrylic, graphite and watercolor on paper. Done in 2023.

Eduardo Santana is a teacher of fine art at one of the Universities in Havana. He is a highly skilled artist, with a substantial degree of conceptual brilliance. Surrealism is a challenging genre for any artist. Some of the Cuban artists tackle this challenge as well as artists anywhere in the world today. Where do these influences come from?

Santana has participated in nearly 50 group shows, several solo shows, and has work in collections in Spain, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway, the US, Canada, France, the UK, Italy, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Argentina, Slovakia, and Switzerland.

Throughout Latin America, the European art movement Surrealism was enthusiastically accepted by certain segments of the artistic community. Many artists were drawn to Surrealism’s emphasis on the irrational, the emotional, the personal, and the subconscious. In general, European Surrrealist artists examined “primitive” art and folk art to discover an instinctive spirit, a reference point that was relevant to Latin American artists searching to establish a distinctive art based on their own multifaceted traditions.

Highly influential in the implantation of Surrealism in Latin America was the founder of the movement, the French poet-philosopher Andre Breton. In 1934 the Chilean artist Roberto Matta, who had worked in France for Le Corbusier, abandoned his training in architecture, so that he could pursue art in Paris, where he became associated with Breton and the Surrealists. His early paintings placed nonrecognizable biomorphic forms onto a receding spatial grid. In his later works scratched and drawn figures occasionally take on the appearance of menacing Latin American generals, operating as one of the few references to his homeland in his otherwise generalized time and space.

Surrealism also allowed many Latin American artists to explore their individual ancestry. Cuban artist Wifredo Lam joined Breton and his Surrealist circle in 1940, after they went into self-exile in Martinique. When Lam returned to Cuba, he began to examine his own African heritage: his mother was Afro-Cuban, and his godmother was a Santeria priestess. He explored this heritage in his work, depicting tropical fantasies filled with forms suggestive of African sculpture, masks, and figures. This emphasis on African forms also related to his contact with the Surrealists, who saw all “primitive” (narrowly meaning non-Western) artistic expression as connected with humanity’s common subconscious forms and experiences. Lam was particularly influenced by his contact with Picasso, who early in the century had used African sculpture as an important inspiration for Cubism.

My favorite... And I'm picky.
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've become a little obsessed with sunscreen over the last past 5 years. I have olive skin and developed melasma after my first pregnancy. I learned the hard way that chemical sunscreens don't help if you have melasma - and they actually make the dark spots even worse. Also the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens (like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate) are absorbed by your skin, and may cause allergies, hormonal imbalance and be toxic overtime. After learning that, I started wearing only mineral sunscreen (active ingredient is zinc and/or titanium dioxide). These are not absorbed and works by creating a physical barrier that reflects the sun (some studies suggest that some nanoparticles of zinc may be absorbed by your skin, so to be really, really safe you should look for non-nano particles). After trying a few brands, I realized the sunscreens with only zinc in their formulas worked better than the blends with titanium dioxide, but this is just my personal preference I guess. And the higher the percentage of zinc, the better. Most pure mineral sunscreens out there are 10-ish % zinc, SPF 30, 40 min water resistant - which is ok. Thinksport goes beyond that: It's 20% non-nano zinc, SPF 50+, 80 min water resistant. It really can't get any better than that! The lotion is not extremely thick when compared to other sunscreens I've tried and I find it pretty easy to apply. As every zinc sunscreen, it does leave a little fine white cast, but honestly Thinksport is not bad at all! It smells nice, lightly citrusy - and the smell vanishes soon. And, it's not overpriced. Best I've tried so far.

Works but will Dry Out Your Skin
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I am a swim instructor at an outdoor pool and this stuff DOES work. I can apply it at the beginning of a 5 hour shift and while I have experienced light tanning it has protected against burning completely without reapplication. The white cast is significant though I don't mind it aesthetically, I know its there for protection . It does rub off on things though so consider yourself warned. Major Con: it is incredibly drying, and the soap needed to scrub it off is A LOT. That coupled with chlorine is a lot for my skin . Still on my sunscreen journey.

Great formula, but the packaging wears off too fast
Color: 260 DEEP BROWN, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Color: 260 DEEP BROWN, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
This Maybelline Build-A-Brow pen makes it really easy to create natural-looking brows with precise strokes. The color applies smoothly, blends well, and stays in place for hours without smudging. I like that it helps fill sparse areas without making the brows look too heavy or fake. The 2-in-1 design is convenient and perfect for quick everyday makeup looks. 10/10 I need to buy again

Very pleased! Works great!
Color: 262 BLACK BROWN, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I have tried a lot of products before this and it's hard to find a color that doesn't have a red hue to it. I got the black brown and it's a great color that doesn't have any red tint. It was super easy to get hair-like strokes. To keep the beginning of the line thin just hold the tube farther back and apply with a light touch in a short flicking motion. It dries quickly and is resistant to smudging. I rubbed decently hard with my finger and the product stayed in place. I didn't do any prep to my brow area before applying this product except for wiping the area with water and drying it. The lines stayed crisp after drying and didn't blur out like some products tend to. There is no noticeable smell, you can't feel the product on your brows/skin after you apply it and it dries matte. The sealant that it comes with doesn't have any noticeable smell either and doesn't feel tacky or hard after it dries. Also, neither product leaves any gloss or shine on the skin once they dry. Everything is nice and matte and feels like there's nothing there. This pen has given me the most realistic results I have ever received from these types of products. I would definitely purchase this again!

Awesome brow liner and gel
Color: 259 ASH BROWN, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Love this pen! Just wish there was a color inbetween the medium brown and the ash brown. I love the brow gel in it though! The pen is nice and makes hairlike strokes that make for a more naturally filled in brow. The gel holds in place all day!
