Het wordt gekenmerkt door zijn rijke, koningsblauwe kleur. Witte en gouden vlekken (van calciet en pyriet) zijn ook gebruikelijk en dragen bij aan het karakteristieke uiterlijk. Lapis lazuli wordt gevormd in kalksteengebieden waar er een hoge concentratie van de specifieke mineralen aanwezig is. De belangrijkste vindplaatsen van hoogwaardige lapis lazuli zijn in Afghanistan, maar het wordt ook gevonden in Chili, Rusland, en andere locaties. Lapis lazuli wordt al sinds de oudheid gebruikt voor sieraden en ornamenten. Het werd ook vermalen tot pigment voor verf, bekend als "ultramarijn", dat door veel van de grote kunstenaars van de Renaissance en de Barok werd gebruikt.
