Sometimes you do a crazy thing and it works.

A recurring nightmare for me is all the wild things I've done that surely must help with the bills, and then I come home to chaw on some humble pie, once again. It is, of course, easier to do crazy things purely for the hell of it, for the bar story of it, and there are plenty more notches on the gun when you weren't expecting to make any dough. But taking that crazyville chance on something kooky with a brass ring has an even better yarn to spin as your audience slaps their foreheads and groans as they can clearly see the cliff you're driving hell bent for leather over. Still, when you jump across that canyon, and your bike explodes on the way, and the people below are rending their clothes and tearing their hair, and yet you miraculously manage to land on the other side, turn and wave with love, and hurl endless handfuls of individually wrapped oversized nonpareils down on the adoring throng, they know that THIS day at least, crazyville triumphed. Such is the case with MONSIEUR BAR STOOL.

I was having one of those weeks that no matter how hard I worked, I was barely breaking even, which is really the same as sinking with a smile. I had acquired a number of saucy French humor magazines from the late 19th century into the 1920s. Some were in fairly good shape, and some were beat up rags. As I flipped through the latter looking for any inner illustrations worth clipping and saving for a rainy day, I came across this one, sans caption of any kind, and immediately thought of Mr. Bar Stool, a purveyor of exactly that in a very prominent location in the historic Old City section of Philadelphia, just half a block up from Elfreth's Alley.

So fully believing in the righteousness of my quest, I put this graphic together with my new Frenchy copy, pulled the lower copy from another clipping from the same mag, made two copies and headed off to see ol' Mr. Bar Stool himself. On the way I spoke on the phone to someone who had personal dealings with our target and he guffawed. Not a simple phooey or tzitz, but a real roar. He told me Mr. Bar Stool was legendary for being tight with a dime, comically so. Red faced, though only I could see it if I bothered to look in the mirror, I was determined to hurl myself against the spike covered bastions anyway. I parked, marched in, introduced myself, showed the work and demanded an astronomical figure. The staff became quiet and wide eyed. Mr. Bar Stool ushered me into the further showroom and talked me down to half of that figure. I agreed, went home, paid whatever bill was staring at me and never went back.

Why?

Certainly no ill will to Mr. Bar Stool. I believe he enjoyed the comic sparkle of that moment in our lives as much as I did.

However... when you put a peanut M & M on the back of your hand, wave the other hand over it with considerable ceremony while a gang of youngsters watch, then thwack your hand and that candy disappears into your mouth, you retreat in glory, as if that is how it always is. Monsieur Bar Stool was a story with a crisp beginning, middle and end. Can't let anything spoil that...

All that said, this makes a fun present for any of your friends who've ever lived or worked near the corner of 2nd and Race.

A NOTE ON OUR PROCESS, OUR CHOICES AND THE QUALITY OF THE GRAPHIC CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO OUR PRINTS.

Every print we deem exciting enough to present to the public via our Etsy store or available here at our studio has gone through a number of steps. The first of those is always discovering and falling in love with an obscure image, always an original that we can hold in our hands. That image is speaking to us, sometime screaming “Don’t leave me here. See what I am, what I was, what I can be, what I SHOULD be!”

There is a real sense of excitement involved, and a great many smiles and knowing grins when we make that deal and bring that ancient print, that battered photo, that scrap of ephemera that contains some scrap of genius from an unknown commercial artist home with us, knowing already how we mean to approach its restoration.

There is the heady promise of a further hunt just as real as what drags a weekend fisherman out of bed at 3AM to work a favorite brook as we start our research, looking for that great backstory, and both ready and willing to tumble down as many rabbit holes as are revealed to us to get that story.

Then there is a meticulous digital restoration that is as often as much fun as riding a vintage Moto Guzzi on a winding coastal road. I don’t care if that sounds crazy, it really is like jumping in the saddle! So many choices, so many chances to take to subtly or spectacularly give new life to otherwise permanently obscure images.

This dedication and the ongoing rush of joy in the accomplishment of it, and the opportunity to share the results in our studio and here on Etsy, is the fire of passion that keeps these engines roaring. We make every effort to ensure our customers are not just satisfied but thrilled, and we happily stand 100% behind our work.

Not the Fetch-Fest I Hoped For
Color: Orange
I had high hopes for the PetDroid Interactive Dog Ball, especially with the newly upgraded features and promises of durable, motion-activated fun. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to expectations for my furry friend. Here’s why I’m giving it 2 stars. Promising Features, Lackluster Results The idea behind this toy is fantastic: a durable, motion-activated ball that would entertain my dog without much effort on my part. The ball is supposed to roll around on its own, keeping my dog engaged and active. However, in practice, it just didn’t capture my dog’s interest. Durability I will give credit where it’s due: the ball is well-made and seems durable. It can withstand some rough handling, which is great for more aggressive chewers. Unfortunately, durability doesn’t mean much if your dog won’t play with it in the first place. Motion Activation The motion activation feature is hit or miss. While the ball does move around as advertised, it didn’t seem to move in a way that intrigued my dog. He gave it a sniff, watched it for a minute, and then walked away, unimpressed. I tried multiple times to get him interested, but he simply wasn’t having it. Lack of Engagement The biggest issue is that the ball just didn’t engage my dog at all. It might be more suitable for a different personality type or breed, but for my pooch, it was a total flop. He’s usually quite playful and curious, so I was surprised by his lack of interest. Final Thoughts Overall, the PetDroid Interactive Dog Ball might work for some dogs, but it was a miss for mine. If your dog is easily entertained by automated toys, it might be worth a try. However, based on my experience, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it. Pros: Durable construction Motion-activated as advertised Cons: Did not engage my dog Motion activation wasn’t intriguing enough Might be more suitable for specific dog types or personalities If you decide to give it a shot, just be prepared for the possibility that your dog might not find it as entertaining as you hope. For us, it’s back to the drawing board for a more engaging toy.

Pup Loves It, Some Other Notes
Color: Orange
We've had this for about six months and my 75 lb, 14-month-old German Shepherd pup LOVES IT. Her favorite is "Crazy Bouncing Mode." In fact, she doesn't care much for the normal mode. She chews it a lot - even drops it in her water bowl at times - and it's still going strong. This is a great purchase. It's nice hands-off entertainment. Do know that it is heavy compared to a normal ball - if your pup likes dropping it on the ground like mine does, it will land with a hard "thud," even with the included sleeve. Hopefully you don't have downstairs neighbors. Also know that the cover that goes over the charging port is removable and your dog may choke on it if they chew it in just the right manner. Definitely only let the pup play with it while supervised. All in all, great toy.

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

Great for smaller dogs
Size: Small
These two balls are perfect for the smaller mouthed dog that loves to play fetch. These balls are not only super durable (lots of teeth biting), but float in the baby pool we use for our miniature dachshunds. The value here is much better than you’d find anywhere else. The noise, if bitten hard enough, was “low” at best. Easy to spot/find if overthrown. Will definitely buy again once these are in bad repair; so far, so good-love these for my fur babies!

My dogs favorite balls
Size: Medium
These are great for my dog who always has to have a ball in her mouth. Not too hard so I don't have to worry about her teeth. They last for ever. They do lose their shape a little over time (like I said, she always has a ball in her mouth) they become a little oval in shape. They still bounce, she still chases it and she still chews on it so I don't think she notices or cares. I've gotten her a bag full of these over time and I have only seen one that she chewed a chunk out.
