Overview
Bathhouses and Riverbanks carries out, for the first time in English, a thorough examination of the criminal records dealing with sodomy in the Republic of Lucca from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. It does this by analysing the work and activities of the Office of Decency, the magistracy entirely devoted to the disciplining of sexual non-conformity. The great tableau that emerges depicts a reality marked by conflicts and contradictions.
Diving deeply into the everyday life of people from all social levels, this book provides new insights into early modern men who were sexually attracted to men, debunking the myth of pederasty as the only form of homoeroticism expressed in early modern societies. It also offers one of the richest discussions so far of early modern male-female sodomy. In examining these records, Grassi’s research raises a fresh new perspective on the religious conflicts that shook Italy in the sixteenth century when the control of sexual behaviour became a bone of contention between State and Church and the debates revolving around its regulation anticipated the themes of mature eighteenth-century jurisdictionalism.

Umberto Grassi is a Marie Skłodowska Curie global fellow at the Research Centre PoliTeSse (Politics and Theories of Sexuality, Università di Verona) and at the Department of History of the University of Maryland (College Park). He is also an honorary research fellow at the Centre for the History of Emotions at the University of Western Australia. Grassi is the author of Sodoma. Persecuzioni, affetti, pratiche sociali (2019) and many articles on the history of sexuality, religious dissent, and emotions.

Praise
“With this meticulously researched and provocative book Umberto Grassi makes an important contribution to the history of sodomy in early modern Italy and, more generally, Europe.” — Cristian Berco, Bishop’s University

Bathhouses and Riverbanks: Sodomy in a Renaissance Republic is an utterly moving, deeply researched, and meticulously contextual urban history that deserves pride of place among the most outstanding books in sexuality studies.” — Helmut Puff, University of Michigan

“This fascinating book offers an important corrective to the widely accepted claim that male/male sex in the premodern world was merely a practice unrelated to perceptions of identity, especially sexual. Here instead we have in vivid details drawn from criminal records of Renaissance Lucca revealing accounts of the ways in which it often entailed deeper relationships, self-perceptions, and even a more spiritual vision of love.” — Guido Ruggiero, University of Miami

“This is a rich and nuanced book, ranging far beyond a statistical analysis of its main source in the records Office of Decency. It aims both to present a picture of the realities of life, especially for the humbler sections of society, and also to interpret these in the light of recent researches into queer theory and the history of emotions. […] It deserves comparison with Michael Rocke’s Forbidden Friendships or Guido Ruggiero’s The Boundaries of Eros and should join them as classic studies of the realities of non-regular sex in Renaissance Italy.” — Christine Meek, review in Cultural and Social History

“Umberto Grassi’s fascinating monograph explores the relationship among rules about sexual activity, the authorities that created them, and the messy reality of everyday sexualities in the late medieval and early modern periods. […] Grassi’s insights are valuable for historians working not only in the histories of sexuality and emotions, but also the family, law, and religious culture in the medieval and early modern periods.” — Roisin Cossar, review in Speculum

“Umberto Grassi has written a most impressive work on sodomy in the Republic of Lucca. […] Grassi deftly combines elements of queer theory, cultural history, social history, and the history of emotions to provide a very fine and provocative study.” — Jeffrey R. Watt, review in Bibliothèque d’Humanisme et Renaissance

How do I know if this is ....
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen, Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen
Mulberry Silk comes primarily from silkworms in China who eat white mulberry leaves, leaving a cocoon of spun silk that is used to weave fabric. With so many cheaper versions of mulberry silk, how do I know if this is the real deal? Well, I really do not know if this pillow fabric is 100% silkworm derived. It is not white so there had to be some level of dye added and that colorant is not listed. So, while I cannot confirm the fabric content, I can share how the pillow feels and functions. I have had silk and satin pillows and went back to cotton because organic cotton simply felt better on my face while sleeping. This pillow case is not like other silks, satin, or cotton. The fabric is smooth and soft - it's like sleeping on butter. I woke up this morning with less hair tangle and my face felt cuddled. I washed the pillow case before using it for the first time and the photo of this pillow case on my pillow (next to a red pillow) shows you how this pillow case looks right after being washed and fitted to a queen sized pillow. The only downside to this pillow case is extra care is needed with washing and drying. I washed the pillow case in a mesh bag in cold water and let it hang dry. It's probably not ideal fabric if you have oily skin or go to sleep with makeup because you cannot use harsh detergents to wash this pillow case and you cannot use fabric softener. I tend to wash the rest of my bedding on high heat and dry at high heat to reduce dust mites and other tiny creatures we cannot see on fabric. The zipper is good quality and easy to open and close - at this price point I would have expected a little better design to hide the metal zipper pull - added a photo to show how the metal zipper tab stops about 2 inches from the end of the pillow case with no "tuck-in" feature. The value of this pillow case seems to be fair for a high end product and it makes a nice gift. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate buttery soft fabric. There are a ton of pillow cases that claim to be mulberry silk at a fraction of the cost of this pillow case - it's just so hard to know what is authentic and what is not so i can only speak to the fact that this pillow case feels good on my face and doesn't leave me with tangled hair. Hope the photos and the description of my experience with this pillow help you decide if this is the right pillow for you or a loved one. Here's to your comfort!

A tangible upgrade for hair care and sleep quality
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: King
I bought this a few weeks back to integrate into a more refined sleep setup, and it has easily met my expectations. It's a premium product that delivers on its promises. Material: You can immediately feel the difference in the 22 momme weight. It feels substantially thicker and more densely woven than typical "satin" substitutes, providing a smooth, glassy texture that feels truly high-end. Hair Protection: This is where it really shines. The frictionless surface has completely eliminated morning tangles and frizz. It allows hair to glide naturally, which is a massive relief if you are trying to preserve hair health or styles overnight. Comfort: It stays incredibly cool to the touch throughout the night. If you sleep hot, this naturally regulates temperature, meaning you never have to flip the pillow searching for the cold side. Appearance: The Silver Cloud color is elegant, and the fabric has a subtle, sophisticated luster. While it does arrive with some packaging creases, they smooth out with a careful press, leaving a very polished look on the bed. Fit: The King size accommodates larger, high-loft pillows perfectly without stretching. The hidden zipper is a great "zero-added-clicks" feature; it keeps the pillow locked in all night without any annoying slippage, though a slightly wider zipper opening would make insertion even easier. Quality: The stitching is tight, and the zipper operates smoothly. It holds up beautifully when hand-washed and air-dried. While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.

Cool, Quiet Luxury for Your Face (and Your Hair Thanks You Too)
Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen, Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen
This is one of those products where you immediately understand the price the second you touch it. First off—this definitely IS real silk, not satin, which is important to verify (esp at this price point). There are so many listings on Amazon of bonnets and pillowcases, sheets etc claiming “silk” and when you get it, it’s satin. This pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, and you can feel it immediately. What surprised me though is that I actually have other 100% mulberry silk items (my daughter’s play silks from Sarah’s Silks), and somehow this pillowcase feels way smoother and more luxurious than those. Same material on paper, totally different experience in real life. From what I can tell, it’s thicker and more tightly woven, which gives it that extra silky, almost glassy feel. It’s buttery smooth, lightweight, and has that cool-to-the-touch finish that’s honestly a dream in the Phoenix, AZ heat, where it’s already 105 in March. Getting into bed feels like flipping your pillow to the cold side… every time. 🧊 It fits a standard queen pillow perfectly (mine’s a thicker foam pillow and slid right in with zero struggle), and the hidden zipper is secure without being annoying. No bunching, no slipping off mid-sleep—just stays put. And it’s not just nice—it’s doing something. My hair definitely wakes up less chaotic, and it feels gentler on my skin overall. One of those quiet upgrades you don’t think about much… until you do. The ivory color is soft and clean-looking, very effortless luxury, and I like that there are other color options if you want to switch up the vibe. Yes, $60 for a pillowcase sounds a little wild—but this actually feels like a $60 pillowcase. Thick, high-quality, and genuinely luxurious, not pretending to be. If you’ve been on the fence, this is one of those small changes that makes your whole sleep setup feel elevated.
